Question

Give significance of the double fertilisation?

Open in App
Solution

After entering into the degenerating synergid, the pollen tube releases two male gametes into the cytoplasm of synergid. Out of which one of the male gamete move towards the egg cell for the fertilization process called as Syngamy. While other male gamete moves towards the two polar nuclei of central cell to fuse with them. Both the processes result in the formation of Zygote and Primary Endosperm Nucleus (PEN) respectively which are diploid and triploid respectively. As the process involves two fertilization events so called as double fertilization. So, the significance of double fertilization is that zygote results in the formation of the embryo while the PEN results in the formation of endosperm.
