Solution
Autonomic nervous system (ANS)
The ANS is a part of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) that controls the regulation of various involuntary functions like respiration, circulation, digestion, etc. The ANS is not under the control of our will.
The ANS is arranged in ganglia chain pairs on both sides of the vertebral column. These ganglia are located in close contact with the organ under their control.
It is further classified into two parts- The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the Parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). They act in an antagonistic manner to each other.
In the SNS, the adrenergic nerves are stimulated thus releasing noradrenaline at the nerve endings. In the PNS, the cholinergic nerves are stimulated thus releasing acetylcholine at the nerve endings.
Body functions under the control of the ANS
Body functions under the control of the ANS are heart rate, respiratory rate, the response of the pupil, digestion, sexual arousal, and urination.
