The bond formed by shared pair of electrons with both electrons coming from the same atom is a coordinate bond.

Coordinate bond:

  • A coordinate bond that consists of a pair of electrons supplied by only one of the two atoms it joins.
  • It is also called a dative bond or dipolar bond.
  • A covalent bond is usually formed when one of two atoms has a complete octet and the other atom requires two electrons.
  • The atom which donates lone pair of electrons is known as a donor and the accepting atom is known as the accepter.
