Question

Give the balanced equations for reactions of aqueous ammonia with the following:
Zinc sulphate

Open in App
Solution

Reaction with zinc sulphate (ZnSO4):

  • When ammonium hydroxide NH4OH is treated with zinc sulphate solution, it forms a white gelatinous precipitate of Zn(OH)2, which is soluble in excess of ammonium hydroxide.
  • One mole of zinc sulphate reacts with two moles of ammonium hydroxide to form one mole of Zn(OH)2 and one mole of (NH4)2SO4.

The balanced equation is:

ZnSO4(aq)+2NH4OH(aq)Zn(OH)2(s)+(NH4)2SO4(aq)
