Question

Give the balanced equations for the preparation of ethanol from monochloroethane and aqueous sodium hydroxide

Open in App
Solution

Preparation of ethanol from Ethyl chloride:
When 1mol, of monochloroethane or Ethyl chlorideC2H5OH reacts with an aqueous alkali base such as sodium hydroxide NaOH, it shows substitution of anions, and Ethanol is produced. In this reaction, Sodium chloride NaCl is also produced.
Chemical reaction observed:
The following reaction is observed:
C2H5CI+NaOHaq→C2H5OH+NaCI
Ethyl chloride Ethanol
This reaction is done at room temperature. The alkali base facilitates the substitution reaction and produces Ethanol.
