Hydrogenation is the process where hydrogen atoms bond to the double bond of a compound, facilitating its conversion to a single bond, in the presence of a catalyst. Hydrocarbons with double bonds are classified as unsaturated. Those that only contain single bonds are saturated.

Ethene reacts with hydrogen in the presence of a finely divided nickel catalyst at a temperature of 150°C ethane formed.
