The definition of chloride of lime is a white powder used for disinfecting which is made by treating slaked lime with chlorine. An example of a chloride of lime is a substance used for commercial bleach and in laundering as a disinfectant.
Formula:Ca(OCl)2
Chemical name:Calcium Hypochorite

Chloride of lime should store well in air tight sealed containers, but the natural presence of carbon dioxide in air causes decomposition, forming chlorine gas and calcium carbonate
CaOCl2+CO2CaCO3+Cl2

Hence chloride of lime gradually lose it chlorine when exposed to air.
