Solution

Chemical properties of H2SO4 (Sulphuric acid)

  1. H2SO4 is a strong and dibasic acid that can provide two positively charged hydrogen ions or protons when reacting with a base.

2. H2SO4 undergoes primary dissociation and secondary dissociation when react with water as shown

Primary dissociation H2SO4(l)+H2O(l)H3O+(aq)+HSO4-(aq)SulphuricWaterHydroniumHydrogenacidionsulphateion

Secondary dissociation HSO4-(aq)+H2O(l)H3O+(aq)+SO4-2(aq)HydrogenWaterHydroniumSulphatesulphateionionion

3. Sulphuric acid reacts with base to give salts and water as a product.

For example: Sulphuric acid reacts with Sodium hydroxide to give Sodium sulphate and Water as a product.

H2SO4(l)+2NaOH(l)Na2SO4(s)+2H2O(l)SulphuricSodiumSodiumWateracidhydroxidesulphate

4. When active metals like Sodium, Zinc, Aluminium etc., react with dilute Sulphuric acid H2SO4 then it liberates Hydrogen gas(H2).

For example: Zinc reacts with Sulphuric acid to give Zinc sulphate and Hydrogen gas as a products.

Zn(s)+H2SO4(l)ZnSO4(s)+H2(g)ZincSulphuricZincHydrogenacidsulphategas

5. Sulphuric acid act as an dehydrating agent.

For example: Sulphuric acid removes water molecules from the blue crystal Copper sulphate and forms white colored Copper sulphate.

Reaction:

CuSO4.5H2O(s)conc.H2SO4CuSO4(s)+5H2O(l)BluecoloredWhitecoloredWaterCoppersulphateCoppersulphate

6. Sulphuric acid decomposes metal carbonates and bicarbonates to liberate Carbon dioxide gas.

For example: Sodium carbonates reacts with Sulphuric acid to give Sodium sulphate, Water and Carbon dioxide gas as a products.

Na2CO3(s)+H2SO4(l)Na2SO4(s)+H2O(l)+CO2(g)SodiumSulphuricSodiumWaterCarbondioxidecarbonateacidsulphategas

while Sodium bicarbonate reacts with Sulphuric acid to give Sodium sulphate, Water and Carbon dioxide gas as a products.

2NaHCO3(s)+H2SO4(l)Na2SO4(s)+2H2O+2CO2(g)SodiumSulphuricSodiumWaterCarbondioxidebicarbonateacidsulphategas
