Give the classification of compound lipids. Explain their functions.

Lipids are classified into 3 types:-

(i) Simple lipids

(ii) Compound lipids

(iii) Derived lipids.

Common lipids are classified into

(a) phospholipids

Function (1) increase the rate of fatty acid of oxidisation.

(2) they help blood clotting

(b) Glycolipids [sphinosine + fatty acid]

Function (1) Maintain stability of cell membrane.

(2) facilitate cellular recognition.
