Question

Give the condition for constructive and destructive interference in terms of phase difference and path difference.

Open in App
Solution

Constructive interference occurs when path difference is an integral multiple of wavelength that is Δx=nλ

And , phase difference, ϕ=2πλΔx=2nπ

Destructive interference occurs when path difference is an odd integral multiple of half of the wavelength that is Δx=(2n+1)λ2

And , phase difference, ϕ=2πλΔx=(2n+1)π
