Differences between active transport and diffusion are given below in the table:

Active TransportDiffusion
It is the process of flow of molecules against the concentration gradient i.e. from their low to high concentration through a semi-permeable membrane.It is the process of spread of molecules in a medium along the concentration gradient i.e. from their high to low concentration.
It is an energy-consuming process, so need ATPs as an energy source.It is a passive process and does not need energy.
Significance: Mineral nutrients such as nitrates, potassium, sulfates, and others are actively transported by root hairs in plants.Significance: Plants use diffusion to exchange gases during respiration and photosynthesis.
