Question

Give the electrode reactions that occur when an aqueous solution of sodium chloride is electrolysed.

Open in App
Solution

When an aqueous solution of sodium chloride (NaCl) is electrolyzed, sodium ions (Na+) and (Cl-) chloride ions are formed

.NaClNa+(l)+Cl-(l)

At anode, oxidation reactions of Cl-is occurred by loss of electrons.

2Cl-(l)Cl2(g)+2e-

At cathode, reduction of Na+is occurred by the gain of electrons.

Na+(l)+e-Na(l)
