  1. Collenchyma is a type of simple permanent tissue, usually mechanical tissue, that provides mechanical support and flexibility to the plants.
  2. The collenchyma tissues are elongated in shape.

Collenchyma has the following functions:

  1. The collenchymatous tissue provides mechanical support to the plants.
  2. These tissues make the plant flexible and also provide tensile strength to the plants.
  3. Some collenchyma tissues contain chloroplasts.
  4. These collenchymatous tissues containing chloroplasts are useful in producing sugar and starch.
  5. The easy bending of leaves, stems, etc., without breaking is provided by collenchyma.
