Functions of sclerenchyma:

  1. Sclerenchyma cells are dead cells and the tissues are long and narrow in shape.
  2. The cells are closely packed to each other and have no intercellular spaces.

They have the following functions,

  1. Sclerenchymatous tissues provide rigidity, flexibility, and strength to the plants.
  2. They also provide mechanical strength or support to the plants.
  3. Sclerenchyma cells produce fibres that are used for different commercial purposes like making paper, robes, etc.
