  1. It can also be termed Pisciculture.
  2. It is a technique in which fishes are cultured in ponds to yield meat and egg.

The merits of fish culture are:

  1. In fish culture, various fishes are reared with a wide variety, and fishes form a great part of our diet.
  2. Fishes are obtained through fish culture.
  3. We get meat and eggs which are highly rich in protein content.
  4. Through properly improved fish culture techniques, a large amount of fish can be obtained from a small area.

The demerits of fish culture are:

  1. It is a threat to biodiversity.
  2. Only economically important and valued fishes will be cultured which creates the problem for less economical fish variety.
  3. There is a greater risk of disease because of the loss of their natural habitat.
  4. Fishes die out when they are reared in an artificial environment which reduces the fish number.
