It is the type of epithelial tissue which consists of a single layer of cells in various regions of the body.
It is also called pavement epithelium and tessellated epithelium.
Nature
Cells of this layer are large in size, thin and flat, irregularly shaped cells and fit closely together like the tiles of the floor, the so-called as pavement epithelium.
These cells rest on a thin basement membrane.
They appear polygonal in shape when viewed from the surface.
The nuclei lie in the center of the cells and are flattened.
Cells bulge from the center due to the presence of nuclei.
The simple squamous epithelium forms a delicate lining in various regions of the body.
The squamous epithelium is further classified into two types, namely, (a)Simple squamous epithelium and (b ) Stratified squamous epithelium.
