Question

Give the percentage of the following gases in air;

  • Oxygen
  • Nitrogen

Open in App
Solution

Air is a mixture of many gases and dust particles, water vapors, etc.

In air Nitrogen is 78%, oxygen is 21%, and the rest of 1% consists of many other noble gases, dust particles, and some pollution also.

Nitrogen is present most abundantly but it does not react with any other gas as the triple bond present between the two atoms of nitrogen makes it almost inert and maintains inertness in the environment.

Nitrogen is extracted from the air by fractional distillation to make fertilizers( Ammonia, urea)

Oxygen plays a vital role as living organisms need oxygen for respiration and also it causes the oxidation of substances in the environment which is restricted up to a level by nitrogen.

Oxygen is produced during photosynthesis and released by plants in a outer environment.
