Give the postulates of kinetic molecular theory of matter. Explain the process of melting on the basis of this theory.
Step-I
Postulates of the kinetic molecular theory of matter are:-
(i) Matter is composed of small, tiny particles called molecules.
(ii) The empty spaces that exist between the molecules are called intermolecular spaces.
(iii) Molecules have the forces of attraction between them, are known as intermolecular forces of attraction. When the force of attraction is between the similar molecules then it is cohesive force but if the force of attraction is between the different molecules then this is adhesive motion.
Step-II
Melting pointIt can be explain as that temperature at which the solid changes into liquid at the atmospheric pressure.
For Eg.Melting of ice at to form water.
On the basis of kinetic molecular theory when we increase the temperature of solids then the kinetic energy of the particles increases. By a change of increase in kinetic energy, the particles will start vibrating with the greater speed and then the solid will melt to become a liquid at the atmospheric pressure.
