1. It is the enlargement of the thyroid gland leads to simple goiter which appears as a lump in the neck region.
2. This is caused due to deficiency of iodine which is required for the production of thyroid hormones.
3. The enlarged thyroid gland tries to absorb maximum iodine available to produce the thyroid hormones.

Reason for people in hilly regions to have simple goiter:

1. In hilly regions soil and water are deficient of iodine.
2. This deficiency causes enlargement of the thyroid gland resulting in simple goiter.
3. Simple goiter can be corrected by adding iodine to diet in the form of iodized salt.
