Corpus luteum:

  1. Corpus luteum is a temporary hormone-producing tissue turned from the follicle which is left after ovulation.
  2. It is produced in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle.

Function:

  1. If the egg is fertilized, corpus luteum starts producing hormone called progesterone.
  2. Progesterone creates a healthy environment for the fetus to sustain the pregnancy, usually between 7 and 9 weeks of pregnancy.
