Give the trends in the following properties of halogens- Atomic size

Halogens: Seventh Group elements with a general electronic configuration of ns2np5 are called Halogens. They include Fluorine (F), Chlorine (Cl), Bromine (Br), Iodine (I), and Astatine (At).

Atomic size: It is the distance between the center of the nucleus and its outermost shell and is also called the atomic radius. It is used to understand the size of an atom.

Reason for increase in the atomic number of halogens down a Group:

As we down the group, the atomic number increases and this leads to an increase in the number of shells to accommodate more electrons. As extra shells are added, thus the size of an atom also increases.

Hence, the increasing order of atomic size of halogens is: F < Cl < Br < I < At
