Give the uses of freon 12, DDT, carbon tetrachloride and iodoform.

Use of freon 12

It is used as a refrigerant.

It is used as propellants in aerosols and foams.

It is also used for air conditioning purposes.

Uses of DDT [p p'-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane]

(i) It is an effective insecticide against the mosquito that smuts malaria and lice that carry typhus.

ii) It is also used in many countries as insecticide for: sugarcane and fodder crops.

[Due to its non-biodegradable nature, its use has been banned in various countries including U.S.A.]

Use of carbon tetrachloride [CCI4]

(i) It is used in the manufacture of refrigerants.

(ii) It is used in the manufacture of propellants of aerosol cans.

(iii) Is is also used as feedstock in synthesis of chiorofluoro carbons and other chemicals.-

(iv) It is used as a fire-extinguisher under the name pyrene due to its non-inflammable nature.

(v) It is used as a cleansing agent in home and industries.

(vi) It is also used as an important solvent.

Uses of iodoform [Tridomethane CHI3]

(i) It is used as an antiseptic, particularly for dressing wounds.

Note Use of freons is not environment friendly, as it damages the ozone layer in the atmosphere.

Due to unpleasant odour of iodoform, its use as an antiseptic is replaced by othei iodine containing compounds.
