Question

Give the word equation for aerobic and anaerobic respiration.

Open in App
Solution

Respiration:

  1. Respiration or cellular respiration is the process of release of energy by breaking down complex food molecules.
  2. The energy that is released is stored in the form of ATP (Adenosine triphosphate).

Depending on the presence or absence of oxygen, two types of respiration are:

Aerobic respiration:

  1. In the presence of oxygen, glucose is broken down to form carbon dioxide, water and large amounts of energy.
  2. Glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy (38 ATP)
  3. It takes place in humans and green plants.

Anaerobic respiration:

  1. In the absence of oxygen, glucose is broken down to form carbon dioxide, water and less amount of energy.
  2. Glucose → ethanol + carbon dioxide + energy (2 ATP)
  3. It takes place in lower organisms like yeast and bacteria.

Final answer: Word equation for aerobic respiration: Glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy (38 ATP)

Word equation for anaerobic respiration: Glucose → ethanol + carbon dioxide + energy (2 ATP)
