Solution

Instructions: explain the shortcuts taken by some candidates to win election. And, give reforms introduced by Election Commission to curb those shortcuts.

Solution:
  • During election campaigns politicians lure voters with money or other items like alcohol, free foodgrains or clothes. To curb this Election Commission has set expenditure limits to ensure money does not play a big role in decision making of voters.
  • Political violence such as booth capturing and bogus voting can be seen on election day. To curb this, Election Photo Identification Card (EPIC) stops bogus voting and booth capturing.
  • Unhealthy impact of caste and religious considerations. To curb this, Election Commission must implement model code of conduct and keep an eye on hate fueled campaigns by candidates.
