Vegetative propagation

  1. Some plants reproduce through non-reproductive or vegetative parts such as stems, roots, or leaves.
  2. The method of reproduction in plants that involves the vegetative parts of the plants is called vegetative propagation.
  3. It is of two types i.e natural vegetative propagation and artificial vegetative propagation.

Advantages of vegetative propagation

  1. This process can be used to grow plants quickly.
  2. This method does not depend on the quality of seeds used.

Disadvantages of vegetative propagation

  1. Since seeds or spores are not involved, the new plant does not get dispersed. They can grow near the parent and cause overcrowding.
  2. Since the plant is identical to the parent, inherited disease and undesirable characteristic of the parent plant is also seen.
