Question

Give two conditions under which cathode rays are produced.

Open in App
Solution

Cathode ray experiment

J. J. Thomson designed a glass tube that was partly evacuated, i.e. all the air had been drained out of the building. The experiment setup contains a glass tube containing two pieces of metals at the opposite end which behave as electrodes. For the production of desirable cathode rays, two metal pieces are connected with a high external voltage. This experiment follows low-pressure conditions which are done by evacuating the air in the tube by suction. Therefore, the main two conditions are :

  • Apparatus as set up by providing a high voltage source.
  • Evacuating the air to maintain the low pressure inside the tube.
