Alkali metals are elements with valency 1. Examples include lithium $(L i)$ , sodium $(N a)$ , potassium $(K)$ , rubidium $(R b)$ and caesium $(C s)$ . Thus, one atom of sodium will combine with one atom of chlorine to from one molecule of sodium chloride $(N a C l)$ .
