Solution

  1. Sedimentation: The process of settling down heavy insoluble particles in a solid-liquid mixture is called sedimentation.
  2. Decantation processes: The process of transferring clear liquid after sedimentation, without disturbing the sediment (insoluble heavy particle) is called decantation.
  3. This method is adopted to separate heavy insoluble solid substances from a liquid.

Example:

  1. Sand and water separation (sand settlement).
  2. Oil and vinegar separation,
  3. Settled chalk powder, and water separation.
