Solution

(a) Acidic oxides

An acidic oxide is an oxide that when combined with water gives off an acid. Non-metallic oxides are acidic oxides.

Example: SO2,CO2,NO2, etc.

(b) Basic oxides

A basic oxide is an oxide that when combined with water gives off a base. Metallic oxides are basic oxides.

Example: Na2O,K2O,CaO, etc.

(c) Amphoteric oxides

Metal oxides which react with both acids as well as bases to produce salts and water are known as amphoteric oxides.

Example: Zn,Pb,Al, etc.

(d) Neutral oxides

Neutral oxides show neither basic nor acidic properties and hence do not form salts when reacted with acids or bases.

Example: NO,CO,N2O, etc.

(i) React with water to give a base

Basic oxides react with water to give a base.

Example: CaOs+H2OlCaOH2Calciumoxidewatercalciumhydroxide

(ii) React with a base to give salt and water

Acidic oxides react with the base to give salt and water.

Example: CO2g+2NaOHsNa2CO3s+H2OlCarbondioxidesodiumhydroxidesodiumcarbonatewater

(iii) React with acids and bases to give salt and water

Amphoteric oxides react with acids and based to give salt and water.

Example: Al2O3s+HClaqAlCl3s+H2OlAluminiumoxideHydrochloricacidAluminiumchloridewaterAl2O3s+NaOHaqNaAlO2s+H2OlAluminiumoxidesodiumhydroxidesodiumaluminatewater
