Question

Give two examples where condition of linear momentum can be applied.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Example 1

  1. Law conservation of linear momentum states that the total linear momentum of a system remains constant in absence of external force on the system.
  2. Explosion of a bomb: Consider the bomb as a system. It explodes without the application of any external force.
  3. So, here we can apply the law conservation of linear momentum.
  4. Linear momentum will be conserved i.e. total linear momentum before explosion will be equal to total linear momentum after the explosion.

Step 2: Example 2

  1. Firing a gun: Consider the gun and the bullet inside it as a system. Gun is fired by the force which acts internally in the system.
  2. So, the force acting on the bullet while firing is internal to the system. There is no external force on the system.
  3. So, here we can apply the law conservation of linear momentum.
