Question

Give two factors responsible for the formation of a covalent bond.

Open in App
Solution

Part 1: Covalent bond

  1. These types of bonds are formed by the sharing of one or more pairs of electrons between the atoms.
  2. The sharing of the electrons is done by the atoms to complete their octet and become stable.
  3. Example: H2,O2 gas.

Part 2: Factors responsible for the formation of covalent bond

  1. Participating atoms should have high ionisation energy so that it does not form cation and anion.
  2. The atomic size of the participating atoms should be small because the smaller the size of atoms stronger will be the bond.
