Give two uses of:
(a) Carbon (b) Carbon dioxide (c) Methane
(a) Use of carbon depends on its allotropic form because its allotropes show different physical properties.
1. Carbon in the form of coal, charcoal and coke is used as a heating fuel.
2. Carbon in the form of graphite is used to make electrodes and writing pencils.
3. Carbon in the form of diamond is used to make jewellery.
4. Fullerenes are used in research.
(b) Uses of carbon dioxide:
1. It is used to produce aerated cold beverages.
2. It is used to produce dry ice.
3. It is used to extinguish fires.
4. It is used to make washing soda.
5. Plants make their food by using carbon dioxide gas.
(c) Uses of methane:
1. It is mainly used as a fuel.
2. It is also used to produce other carbon compounds like acetylene.
