Given $A = 2 (a + b) h$

$A = 144$ , $b = 1$ , $h = 12$

Put values in above equation

$144 = 2 (a + 1) 12$
$144 = 24 (a + 1)$
$144 = 24 a + 24$
$144 - 24 = 24 a$
$120 = 24 a$

$a = \frac{120}{24}$

$a = 5$
