Given a line segment AB joining the points A(4,6) and (8,3). Find
find the ratio in which AB is divided by the y-axis.

Solution

Using the section formula, if a point (x,y) divides the line joining the points (x1,y1) and (x2,y2) in the ratio m:n, then
(x,y)=(mx2+nx1m+n,my2+ny1m+n)
Let this point divides the segment in m:n and we know the point on y-axis has x coordinate 0, then
8m4nm+n=0
8m=4n
mn=48
m:n=1:2.
