Solution
Steps of construction:
Draw a straight line segment AB of length 8.5 cm and line segment CD of length 5.6 cm with the help of a ruler.
Place the compass on the line segment CD to set it for the length 5.6 cm of the segment CD.
Put the pointy end of the compass at one end (say A) of the line segment AB and cut an arc with the help of the other end with a pencil without changing the spread of the compass.
Name the point where the arc cuts the line segment AB (say M)
Now draw another line segment with the help of a ruler.
Name one end of this new line segment as X.
Place the compass on the line segment MB to set it for the length of MB.
Put the pointy end of the compass at point X of the new line segment and cut an arc with the help of the other end with pencil without changing the spread of the compass.
Name the point where the arc cuts the line segment as Y.
Name the point where the arc cuts the line segment as Y.
This is the desired line segment XY.
We can verify the length of XY by measuring it with the ruler.
