On the basis of the position of the centromere, chromosomes are of four types; Metacentric, Sub-metacentric, Acrocentric-arid Telocentric.
(i)Metacentric chromosome - Centromere is located in the centre. Chromosome has equal arms.
(ii)Sub- metacentric chromosome-Centromere is present slightly away from the centre. The chromosome has one short and one long arm.
(iii)Acrocentric chromosome - Centromere is located near the end of the chromosome. Chromosome has one extremely short and one very long arm.
(iv)Telocentric chromosomes - Centromere is present at the terminal or extreme end.
