Certain carboxylic acids such as carbonic acid, acetic acid, benzoic acid, citric acid are used as preservatives in food and beverages. The enzyme lysozyme breaks down bacterial cell walls, which are made of a compound, called peptidoglycan. Lysozyme is found in tears, sweat and saliva. Abnormal function of thyroid glands results is several disorders like goiter, myxedema, (due to hypothyroidism), cretinism (congenital hypothyroidism). Acromegaly is due to overproduction of growth hormone. The three parts of the inner ear are the vestibule of the ear, the semicircular canals and the cochlea. Utriculus is part of vestibular apparatus. Tympanum separates the middle ear from the outer ear.
