Question

Given below are two statements: one is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R.
Assertion A: Fluorine forms one oxoacid.
Reason R: Fluorine has smallest size amongst all halogens and is highly electronegative.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the option given below.

Solution

Fluorine has smallest size and highest electronegativity among halogens, moreover it does not have any d-orbital. Hence it exhibits only uninegative oxidation state in its compounds and cannot expand its octet like other halogens.
Due to this, fluorine forms only one oxoacid. i.e., HOF (hypofluorous acid) unlike other halogens which form a variety of oxoacids.

So both the assertion and reason are correct and reason is the correct explanation of assertion.
