Question

Given below are two statements.
Statement I: Iron (III) catalyst, acidified K2Cr2O7 and neutral KMnO4 have the ability to oxidise I to I2 independently.
Statement II: Manganate ion is paramagnetic in nature and involves pπpπ bonding.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.

Solution

Manganate ion MnO24 has tetrahedral structure and it has only dπpπ π bonds.
Manganate - Wikipedia
Fe3++IFe2++I2

MnO4+IMnO2+IO3

Cr2O27+ICr3++I2

Fe3+ is not used as a catalyst in the conversion of I to I2.
Also KMnO4 in neutral medium oxidises I to IO3.
Hence, both the statements are false.
