For survival of aquatic life the most important parameter is the concentration of dissolved oxygen. More is the value of biochemical oxygen demand, less will be the concentration of dissolved oxygen in water. If the concentration of dissolved oxygen in water is below 6 ppm, the growth of fish gets inhibited. Thus, BOD value is important for survival of aquatic life. Clean water would have BOD value of less than 5 ppm.
