The pills contain formulations of Levonorgestrel that prevent pregnancy, stop ovulation and also thicken the cervical mucus to make it difficult for the sperm to travel to the ovum.
Emergency pills need to be taken within 5 days of intercourse as it normally takes 3 - 4 days for sperm to reach the egg for fertilisation. Administration of progestogens or progestogen-estrogen combinations within 72 hours of coitus has been found to be very effective as emergency contraceptives (morning after pills).
