Placenta: It allows diffusion of substances from the mother to the foetus and from the foetus to the mother. It also produces female hormones like oestrogen and progesterone, similar to endocrine glands.
Amniotic fluid: It helps in the protection of embryo from physical damage by jerks or mechanical shocks, provides uniform distribution of pressure around the embryo, allows limited movements of the foetus, and prevents the foetus from sticking to the amnion.
