Upper epidermis:

  2. It also has some small openings known as stomata.

Palisade tissue:

  1. They are elongated cylindrical cells that are arranged in a single layer below the upper epidermis.
  2. They are closely packed and contain an abundant number of chloroplasts.

Spongy cells:

  1. They are irregularly shaped parenchyma cells that have large intercellular spaces and air voids between them.
  2. They have fewer chloroplasts and help in the diffusion of gases.

Substomatal space:

  1. It is a cavity located in immediate proximity to the stoma.
  2. It helps in the rapid diffusion and exchange of gases.

Stoma:

They are openings in plant leaves that regulate the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen..
