Antennae detect touch because they possess tactile sensillae and the olfactory sensillae helps in sensing smell. Anal cerci have auditory sensillae, which are used for hearing purposes. Maxillary palps hold gustatory (taste reception) and olfactory (smell reception) sensillae. Therefore all of these are sense organs.

The proventriculus is a thick-walled structure which has six teeth. This is also known as gizzard and is utilized for grinding food.
