The figures have 1, 4, 9 and 16 squares respectively.
The first figure has $1^{2} = 1$ square.
The second figure has $2^{2} = 4$ squares.
The third figure has $3^{2} = 9$ squares.
The fourth figure has $4^{2} = 16$ squares.

Hence, the next figure, i.e. $5^{t h}$ figure will have $5^{2} = 25$ squares.
