  1. Neurotransmitters are the chemical messengers produced by the nerve cells.
  2. These are the molecules used by the nervous system to relay information between nerve cells, or from nerve cells to muscles.
  3. A neurotransmitter affects a nerve cell in three ways: excitatory, inhibitory, or regulatory.
  4. The seven main neurotransmitters are: dopamine, acetylcholine, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), histamine, glutamate, serotonin, and norepinephrine.
