During this stage of pachytene (stage of prophase1 of meiosis), bivalent chromosomes now clearly appears as tetrads. This stage is characterized by the appearance of recombination nodules, the sites at which crossing over occurs between non-sisters chromatids of the homologous chromosomes. Paired chromosomes are called as homologous chromosomes. Crossing over is exchange of genetic material between homologous chromosomes. This process completes at the end of pachytene leaving chromosomes linked at sites of crossing over.
