Question

Given below is the structure of root hair. Observe it and answer the following questions.

  1. Label any four parts of the figure.
  2. Define the term root hair.
  3. Why does a root have large number of root hair?
  4. What is the use of large vacuole in the root hair?

Solution

(i).

1) Cell Wall: The outermost covering of the root hair is the cell wall. Root hair possesses thin cell walls to speed up the intake of water by osmosis.

2) Nucleus: The nucleus of the root hair cell contains DNA. It also prevents extra expansion of the cell when it absorbs water.

3) Vacuole: The root hair cell has a large vacuole which speeds up the movement of water to travel up the xylem and reach the cells.

4) Tonoplast: It is also called the vacuolar membrane as it surrounds the vacuole and separates the vacuolar contents from the cell's cytoplasm. Its main function is to regulate the movement of ions around the cell, and prevent the cell from harmful materials.

(ii).

Root Hair:

  1. Root hair is an elongated tubular extension of an epidermal cell of a root.
  2. Root hair is unicellular, with a very thin cell wall and devoid of cuticles. This allows free movement of substances in and out of the root hair cell.
  3. The function of the root hair cell is to obtain water from the ground and transport it to the xylem.
  4. The number of the root hair is large to increase the surface area for the absorption of water and the salts from the soil.

(iii).

Roots have a large number of root hair as it increases the overall surface area and hence allows an increase in the absorption of water and dissolved minerals from the soil with the process of osmosis.

(iv).

Role of the vacuole in root hair:

  1. Root hair cell has a large vacuole.
  2. This vacuole increases the movement of water to travel up the xylem and reach the cells.
  3. Also, the concentration of the salt solution inside the vacuole is higher than the concentration of the salt solution in the soil.
  4. This helps water to transport from the soil to the root hairs by osmosis.
