Question

Given molecular weight of hydrogen molecule is M=2.016×103 kg/mol. Calculate the root - mean-square speed of hydrogen molecules (H2) in km/s at 373.15 K(100C). (Answer to the nearest integer)

Solution

The mass of an H2 molecule may be calculated from the molecular weight as
m=MN0=2.016×103kg/mol6.02×1023mol1=3.35×1027 kg
Then 12mv2rms=32kT
vrms=3kTm=3(1.38×1023)(373.15)3.35×1027=2.15 km/s
