In the order of increasing metallic character in the

Period -

Group -

Solution

  1. The elements have the tendency to lose outer electrons to obtain noble gas configuration. The metals have this tendency.
  2. This property of losing e- and forming positively charged is known as metallic property. It is easier for an element to lose one valence electron as compared to losing 2 or 3 valence electrons.
  3. Also, it is easier for large species to lose electrons more easily and there is less effective nuclear charge.
  4. As we move down the group, the metallic character increases as the size of the atom increases.
  5. Along a period, metallic character decreases as the size decreases.
  6. Thus the order of increasing metallic character will be,

Group – Li<Na<K<Rb<Cs

Period - Ne<F<O<N<C<B<Be<Li
